Hundreds of children from throughout New Zealand will get the chance to attend school holiday camps designed to give them and their foster, kin or whanau carers a relaxing break this summer.
The first `KidzaCool Adventures' programmes for children in care will be held in January and April, at each of the country's seven Te Puna Whaiora Children's Health Camp locations.
The Government-funded camps are about giving children in care some fun and adventure, while their carers can also have time to relax or catch up with friends and family.
Carers can register children in their care who are aged 5-12, who have lived with them for more than 12 months.
Children's Health Camps Chief Executive Dr Fiona Inkpen said the camps would give children a variety of action, adventure, games, arts, crafts, quiet times and socialising.
``The idea is to give children a holiday that is all about fun,'' Dr Inkpen said. ``It will also be a wonderful opportunity for many carers, who will be able to catch up on some of the things they might not always get the time or space to do.''
Te Puna Whaiora Children's Health Camps is working with Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust, NZ Family and Foster Care Federation Inc and Child, Youth and Family to make the camps successful.
Registrations are being taken now for the January and April programmes. Registrations close for the January programme on November 25 and the April programme on 26 February.
Carers can get information on the Te Puna Whaiora Children's Health Camps website (www.healthcamps.org.nz) or apply through the programme's supporting agencies including: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust NZ NZ Family and Foster Care Federation Inc Social Workers in Schools Strengthening Families Child, Youth and Family Community based social services providers.
